A systematic literature review of health economic modelling approaches used to evaluate treatment-resistant and uncontrolled hypertension: a critical appraisal and considerations for the design of future model analyses

Our systematic literature review aimed to critically assess the construct validity and quality of existing health economic models used to evaluate management approaches for uncontrolled and treatment-resistant hypertension. Identified models demonstrated that improvements in blood pressure were cost-effective; however, inputs based on non- and general- hypertensive populations likely underestimate the risk of cardiovascular events in people with uncontrolled or treatment-resistant hypertension. Furthermore, despite the potential economic burden, no models were identified which evaluated emerging pharmacotherapies in these underserved populations.
